      Synopsis

Chuck Palahniuk's startling and outrageous debut novel, basis of the hit movie starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.

      Publishers Weekly

The 2008 audio edition of Palahniuk's ground-breaking 1996 novel provides a timely opportunity to contemplate the direction of Generation X and the wider, popular culture over the past dozen years. The white, male, 20-something angst of the story's unnamed protagonist and his mysterious partner in crime, Tyler Durden, may now sometimes seem like slightly dated grunge rock. Also, the themes of domestic terrorism and insurrection certainly play differently in a post-September 11 world. Yet Palahniuk's power to provoke our collective sacred cows remains undeniable. The narrative-with its delusional twists and turns-presents serious challenges on audio. James Colby cleverly plays deadpan cool through much of the early plot exposition so that the chaos that eventually takes hold becomes all the more eerie and surreal. He pulls off the convoluted climactic revelations with emotional authenticity. The listening experience may be too jarring for general audiences merely hoping for a commute diversion. However, the release offers today's crop of young urban hipsters an opportunity to connect with the voices of a previous decade. A W.W. Norton paperback (Reviews, June 3, 1996). (July)

      Biography

With a disturbing but mordantly funny body of work that began with 1996's Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk has become a cult author who regularly attracts both the interest of Hollywood and the bewilderment of readers who have never seen writing so fearless, modern, and smart.

January 23, 2010: The Main Characters in the book are Tyler Durden, Marla Singer and The First Person Narrator. The Book starts with a scene from the ending of the story where Tyler is poking a gun at the Narrators head. The Narrator of Fight Club has Insomnia because of the job he has. This is the Conflict he has with himself and he constantly tries to find a cure for it. He later joins support groups and finds relief from Insomnia. He sleeps better every night after these groups, thats when he got addicted. But after a few weeks of attending these groups, he meets Marla Singer, Who is a faker just like him. Marla later finds out he is a faker too. So the narrator soon couldn't find relief anymore knowing that someone knows about what he was doing. This is when he meets Tyler, a soap vendor. They become great friends and make a new type of therapy, one that is reasonable for people with stress, the fight club. But is there more to this book than just fighting? Find out for yourself!

This book is mind-blowing! When I first started reading it, I got kind of bored and at one point didn't even want to finish the book. But my brother, who had read it, Urged me to because he said this book was outstanding and awkward at the same time. And he was right! The Images Fight Club brought to my head every time I came home to read it were thrilling. A lot of suspense happens the deeper you get into the book, which will make you keep reading! After finishing this book, I watched the movie and there were quite a lot of things they changed. The Movie was good, but as I said, this book is literally mind blowing! So please, no matter how curious you are, read the book first!

I liked several scenes from this book and only disliked few. Most of the parts I liked come from the last few chapters. I read Chapters 1-10 (estimating) in like 20 days because I would get bored after every chapter, then after the mystery and constant turn-arounds started happening, I finished the last hundred or so pages in two days. Once again though, read every page of this book, miss one important page or even just one important line, you just might not understand this work of art. The few scenes I disliked were the flashbacks the narrator had that didn't even signal that he was having one which kind of confused me (Maybe because I was just bored AT FIRST) I also didn't like how the book started with the near ending which also confused me. I loved the way Mr.Palahniuk used the 1st person narrative, he made me feel like I was actually in the book! Everything going through the Narrators head was written in depth. Even the Haikus he wrote in his mind were shown.

All in all, I Loved this book, it's a book that would definitely stay in my mind if not in my heart. I would definitely, NO DOUBT recommend this book to readers who want an exciting reading experience. I would also recommend this book to people who don't read much because the fight club is so in depth even if it just has about 200 pages. This book may or may not change the way you look at the world, but it is still a great read. Mind-Blowing.

January 04, 2010: Crazy book. But intriguing as well. It helped for me to watch the movie first and then read the book. There was so much things going on in this book. Fantastic read and writing style. I wish it was longer though.
